The Northwest Greenway receives European award for 'Exemplary Initiative' (13/09/2013)

The award was presented yesterday by the European Greenways Association in the sixth edition of the awards held in the Portuguese city of Viseu

The Northwest Greenway yesterday received the award for 'Exemplary Initiative' issued by the European Greenways Association in the sixth edition of the European Greenways Awards held in the Portuguese city of Viseu.

The award for 'Exemplary Initiative' highlights the work of the restoration of the old train stations along the route of the Northwest Greenway.

In this section, highlighting those who have made Greenways initiatives and special or original efforts in sustainable development and tourism and its infrastructure, have also been awarded the Greenway Greenway Ireland and the UK.

The prize was collected by the manager of Greenways Consortium of the Region of Murcia, Juan Soria, the jury of this edition was made by the Director of Tourism of the European Union, Peter Ortún, the Director General for Agriculture and Rural Development European Commission Nivelin Noev, director of the European Association for Accessible Tourism, Craig Grimes, the director of the Biodiversity Foundation, Sonia Castañeda, Director Tourism of Portugal, Teresa Larsson, the promoter of the great European Greenways route, Philipp Cerny, Secretary General of the European Greenways Association and director of the Foundation Programme of Railways, Carmen Aycart and Secretary of the Jury and Director of the European Greenways Association, Mercedes Muñoz.

Northwest Greenway

The Northwest Greenway has seven lodges with a total 230 seats.

So the old station has 24 seats Caravaca; Cehegín, 48 places; Bullas, 44 places; Mula, sleeps 28; Albudeite, sleeps 10; Campos del Río, and Alguazas 16 places, 60 places.

Since 2008 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, through the Greenway Consortium Region of Murcia, has spent more than four million euros for the development of a network of lodges along the Greenway, in order to promote it as a Way of Pilgrimage to Caravaca de la Cruz and increase the supply of tourist accommodation in the area.

At seven shelters must be added the investment made in the construction of the hostel El Llano de Caravaca de la Cruz.

The Northwest Greenway, part of an old railway line between Murcia and Caravaca de la Cruz in disuse since 1971, a member since 1999 of one of the principal axes of the western Mediterranean Green Network in the Region of Murcia.

The track has a mixed type of firm along its 78 kilometers, with stretches of asphalt and gravel compacted, it can circulate pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and people with disabilities, and has 13 rest areas, 10 viaducts six tunnels.

This route, which passes through nine municipalities, provides, in addition to the variety of its landscapes, an important part of the natural and cultural heritage of the Region of Murcia, with three natural areas included in the Natura 2000 network, a large number of places in their nearby or the path itself listed as a Cultural (BIC) and the distinction as historical sets high cultural value of the historic Caravaca de la Cruz, Cehegín and Mula.

In addition, the city of Caravaca de la Cruz is a focus of Christian religious tourism, which has been greatly strengthened following its recognition as 'holy place' by the Vatican and the award to celebrate a Jubilee Year in perpetuity every seven years.
